What was so interesting about 2000s rock was how many different styles of it there were. The nu-metal and post-grunge subgenres technically started in the mid-'90s, but they were refined and popularized the following decade.

In addition to nu-metal and post-grunge, there was also pop-punk, emo and alternative rock making waves on the radio and at music festivals. There was a lot going on at the time, but it feels like that was the last time there really were true subgenres in rock music.

Considering the fact that 2006 was already 20 years ago, it's safe to say that a lot of us look back on the 2000s and feel nostalgia. Or, maybe you feel angst and rage, which was the overwhelming sentiment of the youths back then and why so many of these bands resonated so well and became so popular.

Since bands from so many different generations released albums during the 2000s, we'd like to clarify that this list only features bands that broke through during the 2000s. Thus, Green Day's American Idiot, Alice In Chains' Black Gives Way to Blue and other similar albums are not included because such bands were around and released albums prior to the 2000s.
