Part of what makes Trader Joe’s so appealing is its small, cozy size compared to most grocery stores. That can make things difficult at peak times, though, especially if you’re trying to stock up for a week or more.
So what’s the best time to make your Trader Joe’s run? How busy each store gets can vary by location, so you might need to test out a few days and times for yourself to find what works best. While peak times will vary, here are a few tips to make the most out of your shop.
When Is Trader Joe’s Most Crowded?
It probably won’t come as a surprise, but Trader Joe’s is typically the busiest on weekends and right before major holidays. Speaking from personal experience, my local store is almost always packed through most of the day on Saturday and Sunday. If you need to go on a weekend, though, getting to the store within an hour of opening is your best bet. It’s usually not too busy yet, so it’s easy to grab everything and move on before the store fills up.
I’ve also tried going later on Saturday and Sunday, usually after dinnertime—around 5 or 6 p.m. While the store is definitely less crowded at this time, the shelves are also emptier, and it’s easy to leave without snagging everything on your list.

What’s the Best Day and Time to Visit Trader Joe’s?
Visiting Trader Joe’s during the week is usually best if you want to avoid crowds.
“Head to Trader Joe's in the morning or late night before they close to enjoy the slowest crowds during the week,” says Andrea Woroch, consumer and budgeting expert. “The store gets busier throughout the day with peak crowds in the late afternoon into the evening.”
According to Reddit, the general consensus among shoppers is that weekday mornings are the best time to go if you’re hoping to shop with as few shoppers as possible. Some commenters specifically mentioned Wednesday mornings as one of the least crowded times for shopping. If weekday mornings are possible for you, try a different day for each shopping trip to see what your local TJs is like at that time.
How Often Does Trader Joe’s Restock?
Going at off-times to avoid crowds is one way to make your shopping experience a little easier, but it’s not worth it if you can’t find what you need. Most Trader Joe’s stores restock their shelves continuously throughout the day, but if it’s especially busy, they can still run out of items. In general, most busy stores receive deliveries at least once a day, but if there’s a specific item you’re looking for that’s out of stock, you can always ask an associate when they expect a new shipment.
The one exception is seasonal items—there’s typically limited stock.
“Grab seasonal items when you see them because they typically sell out quickly and you won't know how often they will be restocked,” Woroch says. Store associates can help you find out whether an item will be restocked or is sold out for the season.
