1. Nero (Roman Empire)
Emperor Nero, who reigned from AD 54 to 68, is notorious for his extravagant lifestyle and the construction of the Domus Aurea, or “Golden House.” This opulent palace, built after the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD, spanned parts of the Palatine, Oppian, and Caelian hills, covering an area of approximately 100 acres. The complex featured lavish decorations, including gold leaf, precious stones, and ivory, and even included an artificial lake. Nero’s indulgence in such excesses was deeply resented by the Roman populace, leading his successors to strip the palace of its treasures and repurpose the land for public use (britannica.com).
