5. The Nok

Deep in the heart of Nigeria, the Nok culture flourished as one of Africa’s earliest iron-working societies. Dating back to around 1000 BCE, they are celebrated for their hauntingly expressive terracotta sculptures—some of the oldest in West Africa. Their mastery of iron technology shaped later civilizations across the region. The Nok left an enduring artistic and technological legacy that continues to intrigue archaeologists and inspire African heritage today.
