Still Wakes the Deep is getting its first DLC, and it's just around the corner

In a world where horror games are a dime a dozen, Still Wakes the Deep managed to rise above the tides. Perhaps I'm slightly biased - I am Scottish, after all - but The Chinese Room's eerie oil rig-set misadventure had its hooks in me from start to finish. As someone who's far too excited about Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, The Chinese Room's most recent outing proved that they can make truly great videogames and, quite honestly, sparked some hope that Bloodlines 2 can be the horror epic I'm hoping for. But, ahead of the vampire RPG's release, Still Wakes the Deep is getting a new DLC, aptly entitled Siren's Rest.

Set over ten years after the events of Still Wakes the Deep, Siren's Rest sees you step into the shoes (or flippers) of a specialist diving team that's been tasked with exploring the wreckage of Beria D. Cast as Mhairi, your job is to recover the remains of the crew and try to uncover what happened back in 1975 - both for posterity, and to try and bring some reprieve to the families that lost their loved ones.

While the events of the Still Wakes the Deep take place above the North Sea, Siren's Rest sees us dive deep below the waves, slipping into a dark, watery tomb haunted by human remains and something much more sinister. The Chinese Room really is putting the 'survival' in 'survival horror game' this time around - it's just you, the sea, your camera, and a few tools.

The action takes place in both the water and on areas of dry land, meaning that a lot of your time will be spent swimming - not terrifying at all, I know. Environments are suitably dreary, salt-eaten bodies float in the middle of tight, metallic corridors, and it feels like something is always moving around in your peripheral vision. There's an eeriness in that crushing silence, and if something goes wrong, there's nowhere for you to go.

You'll use your cutting torch to tear down rusted iron doors and navigate Beria D's long-forgotten hallways, as well as your crowbar to pry away wreckage and force a path into the rig's heart. You're also armed with your camera, which you can use to take photographs of people's remains, their possessions, or, if you're quick, the thing that seems to be hunting you. There are no guns and no knives down here, just a few exploration tools and your own fortitude.

As someone who really loved her time with Still Wakes the Deep, I can't wait for more. I'll shout out the all-Scottish voice cast, too, with Lois Chimimba as Mhairi, and Lorn Macdonald presumably starring as the colleague that's screaming down the radio in the trailer. I love a good Scottish accent in a videogame, and Siren's Rest is set to deliver all over again.

The Chinese Room has confirmed that Still Wakes the Deep's first DLC, Siren's Rest, will release on Wednesday June 18, priced at $12.99 / £9.99.
