Fallout creator's 22-year old D&D game is finally on Steam, and its re-release fixes all of its biggest issues

The Temple of Elemental Evil has long been a bit of an ugly duckling when it comes to Troika's DnD game adaptations. Both Arcanum and Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines are considered must-plays for TTRPG enjoyers. However, despite being grounded in the iconic world of Greyhawk and having had its development led by Fallout creator Tim Cain, ToEE never reached the same echelon of cult hit status.

To be honest, I'm not surprised. The Temple of Elemental Evil was a buggy mess when it launched in 2003, and has relied solely on community support since then. ToEE's combat was top-tier, but everything else kinda sucked, at least until the Circle of Eight and Temple+ mods brought it all up to par. Now, ToEE has been re-released on Steam, collating two decades-worth of love into one, easily-digestable package.

"This Steam release builds on the outstanding efforts of the Circle of Eight and Temple+ modding communities, who have supported the game for years," publisher Sneg says in a press release. "It introduces more than a thousand fixes and enhancements, from improved stability and AI to smoother performance, a refined UI, and numerous quality-of-life upgrades."

The Temple of Elemental Evil launches on Steam today, December 10, 2025. Check out the Steam page for more info.

So, if you've had ToEE on your to-play list for a while now, this is the time to pull the trigger. Greyhawk may not be the very first DnD campaign world, but Gary Gygax's module is the perfect setting for combat purists thanks to the multi-levelled dungeon, the eponymous Temple in the case of ToEE, that sits at the heart of it.

But that's not to say you'll only be running the gauntlet. As noted, the sheer amount of community effort that's been put into fixing ToEE's questing, restoring cut content, and even introducing new classes elevates it beyond a glorified combat sim. All of this, wrapped in the fact you'll get to play using the classic DnD ruleset, makes ToEE a pretty compelling prospect.
