What was the Splitgate 2 release date? Splitgate 2 is still filled to the brim with portal-popping action we all love, but there are new strategic layers to the shooter that take it to the next level thanks to the introduction of class-based factions. Oh, and it has a battle royale mode.

While plenty of new games are announced with a glitzy CGI trailer before going dark for a hot minute, 1047 was quick off the mark to let Splitgate 2 gameplay out into the wild for us all to salivate over. Now out in the wild, it's clear that it's one of the best FPS games 2025 has to offer. Here's what you need to know about Splitgate 2 before jumping in, including information about the trailers, gameplay, and more.

Splitgate 2 launched on June 6, 2025. Splitgate 2 is available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S consoles.

As an extra treat, Splitgate 2's battle royale mode was announced and shadowdropped at Summer Game Fest 2025.

The 2025 launch window was further reaffirmed at the 2024 TGAs at the end of its event trailer.

Splitgate's first open alpha took place in February 2025, before it entered open beta in May. The free PC game didn't stay in beta for long, though, as 1047 announced on June 3 that it would fully launch days later on June 6.

Splitgate 2 trailers

The initial cinematic announcement trailer for Splitgate 2 aired on Thursday, July 18, 2024. We can already see there's a major departure from the original game, with the introduction of Splitgate 2's three main factions. From the footage shown, it's clear that each faction has unique abilities, which could see the importance of portals diminish despite their continued presence in the series.

The next trailer for the game arrived during The Game Awards 2024. The short, minute-long trailer places an even greater emphasis on the portal elements of its gameplay loop, as players zip from section to section of each map. Our read is that this is a response to complaints over the class system taking precedence and that portalling around is still the name of the game.

Next is the open alpha teaser, which hints at the exciting new 8v8v8 Multi-Team Portal Warfare mode while announcing the first opportunity for everyone to get involved with testing.

Then there's the Open Beta Announcement, which swiftly followed the conclusion of the alpha.

Next up is The Lab trailer, which any Halo enjoyer will tell you is pivotal to the whole experience. The lack of Forge was a huge blow to Infinite, so it's great that 1047 has learned from 343's mistake and made sure to include a map editor at launch.

The 'Something to Fight For' launch announcement trailer got us all right in the feels, and serves as a reminder that 1047 isn't shying away from lore in Splitgate 2.

Finally, at Summer Game Fest 2025, the Splitgate 2 Battle Royale trailer aired, revealing a previously-unrevealed BR mode.

Splitgate 2 gameplay

In early August 2024, 1047 aired in-game footage of the 4v4 shooter for the first time. Taken from a playtest featuring top aimers like Timothy 'iiTzTimmy' An and Seth 'Scump' Abner, the video introduced the new core features that separate Splitgate 2 from its predecessor, namely the factions and the abilities you'll be able to use.

Each faction is incredibly distinct, which is the bare minimum when it comes to building a robust class system. Aeros is geared towards entry fragging and agile movement, think Wraith from Apex Legends or Jett from Valorant. Meridian, meanwhile, is more supportive, boasting healing grenades and wallhacks that allow them to spot players behind cover. Sabrask is perhaps the most straightforward class, operating as a shielder and grenadier, but that's not to say it's any weaker than the other two. As with any team-based game that has a faction system, you'll want to mix and match your team composition to maximize your strategic options.

There's one more major addition we spotted in the gameplay video that's well worth highlighting: sliding. That's right, the freneticism is being dialed up to 11 in Splitgate 2 as you'll be able to glide across the floor at top speed.

In mid-August, we finally got to get hands-on with Splitgate 2 as part of a closed alpha test - be sure to check out our Splitgate 2 preview. While the headline features highlighted above are certainly a major part of the gameplay loop, it's clear that portal mastery is still going to be the most important skill to get down. While the Sabrask smart wall is as powerful as the gameplay video highlights, it can easily be circumvented by a well-placed portal - bullets can't pierce the shield but portals can.

Portals themselves have had a revamp, as 1047 has opted to do away with the portal-destroying EMP grenades and the dual keybindings required to open and close them (the latter can still be opted into). Instead, the studio's using a new 'auto triple portal' system. Now, you simply press one key to open and close portals, while you can destroy enemy portals by overwriting them with your own. It's seriously intuitive, and we were shocked by how well it worked.

During the test, we got to try out two new power weapons: a powerful assault rifle called the Slipstream that can be separated into two akimbo SMGs, and a rocket launcher capable of firing its entire three-round magazine at once with its alt-fire.

Power weapons have trade-offs, so they're not an instant-win condition. The Slipstream won't let you use utility while you're running around with it, while the rocket launcher only comes with six rounds. While a triple shot will guarantee a kill, you'll only be able to add two to your tally before it's spent. Fortunately, direct hits with a single rocket will still kill, so you'll have to keep your aim crisp if you want to maximize the launcher's potential.

Alongside a standard Team Deathmatch mode, we got to try out Hotzone - a king-of-the-hill-adjacent mode with a few unique quirks. In Hotzone, the second zone will always spawn closer to the losing team in an attempt to keep the game competitive. Additionally, zone capture progress doesn't reset when control over it flips, meaning you can get the zone to 99%, only to lose it completely if the enemy team cleans house and captures it for the last 1%. As such, you'll have to coordinate your pushes onto the objective.

Alongside Splitgate 2, 1047 has released a brand-new companion app. The app features lore-driven comics and cards to collect, allowing you to immerse yourself in the game's universe ahead of launch. You'll also eventually be able to earn in-game rewards through the app.

And that's everything you need to know about Splitgate 2. If it's not a bit of you, peep our best multiplayer games guide for more competitive shooters to try instead.
