Happy Thanksgiving! If you're looking to partake in some retail therapy on this Black Friday, then let me recommend the e-reader I trust to store my entire digital library and latest Libby finds. I'm talking about the Kindle Paperwhite, currently marked down to its lowest-ever price as part of the Amazon Black Friday sale.

Now, when I'm not hard at work as Mashable's tech editor, I also like to collect books. I have quite the collection of rare and first-edition science-fiction books. I have so many books, in fact, that I ran out of room, and now depend on my Kindle for new reads. I love my Kindle Paperwhite, and I'm not the only one.

Mashable reporters have tested the whole Kindle lineup, and the Paperwhite is our favorite of the bunch. However, before you click "Add to cart," please read this first. While you can pick up this e-reader on sale for $124.99, I actually recommend spending a little more for the version without lockscreen ads. That will set you back $144.99, but hear me out: It's absolutely worth it for anyone who hates ads.

When you pay more for the version without lockscreen ads, you'll see beautiful black-and-white photographs displayed on the e-reader's lockscreen. If you don't, you'll see an endless cast of ads for cheap romantasy books that you'll probably never read. So, reader, heed my advice and click the option that reads "Without lockscreen ads," especially if you're giving this e-reader as a gift this year.

Why we love the Kindle Paperwhite

The newest version of the Paperwhite has everything we look for in an e-reader: ample storage space, an easy-to-read glare-free display, adjustable warm light, and simple controls. It's also fully waterproof, so you can pack your Kindle when heading to the pool or beach. The 7-inch display is large enough that you can read without squinting, too.

And if you're looking to pay a little (or a lot) less for your e-reader, the best Black Friday Kindle deals start at just $79.99. The base model Kindle is currently 27% off at Amazon.
