Lies of P soars to new Steam heights thanks to a tough DLC and free update

Lies of P is one of few soulslikes to really prove that it belongs side by side with Fromsoftware. Neowiz's gothic retelling of the story of Pinocchio certainly has some Bloodborne DNA in there, but the game easily steps beyond these comparisons the more you play it. So whether you're in the midst of Elden Ring Nightreign or Dark Souls, a detour to Krat is certainly worth your time. Turns out a lot of other players think so, too, as with the new Overture DLC and a free update hitting the game, Lies of P is suddenly the most popular it's ever been on Steam.

Lies of P Overture is out right now, after a surprise launch during this year's Summer Game Fest showcase. The prequel expansion has been highly anticipated for some time, and it turns one of the best soulslikes into an even better experience. As Geppetto's puppet, you explore the late-19th-century Belle Époque beauty of Krat before the Puppet Frenzy massacre turns it into a wasteland. My colleague Niall loved the DLC in their Lies of P Overture preview, so be sure to check that out if you're on the fence. Overture is the game's ultimate challenge, so be prepared to enter if you're a glutton for punishment.

This isn't the only thing that Neowiz has brought to the game, though. Whether you're a new or returning player, you now have access to difficulty options and a boss rematch system. There are three levels of challenge to pick from, so if you felt like Lies of P was too hard the first time around, or have stayed away from the game for fear you'll get stuck, these options will help you out. If you want to dial the challenge up even further, though, the new boss rematch system is here to test your limits. You can simply fight bosses you've already defeated, or face off against a series of three or more bosses in a row with limited HP and items.

With the DLC and update now live in Lies of P, the game is also enjoying a huge Steam resurgence. While it had a launch peak of just under 20,000 concurrent players, Lies of P is now at a new high of 27,908 and climbing. I have no doubt that this number is going to keep going up as more players dive into the game, too.

It's also worth noting that when Lies of P launched back in 2023, it came to Game Pass on day one. So it's perfectly possible that players who would've been on Steam back then instead went with Microsoft. Lies of P also left the Game Pass library in March of this year, and you can snag it at 50% off on Steam until Friday June 12, so these factors could easily impact the number of people going to Steam as well. Either way, it's doing incredibly well.
