Ever since the days of Doom and Quake, we've seen FPS games come up with all manner of creative ways to build on the core run-and-gun gameplay. Even before them, Ultima Underworld established the fundamentals of the more open-ended immersive sim, later popularized by Thief and Deus Ex. Arkane proved itself a modern master of the format with Dishonored and Prey, and then built upon those ideas for its magnum opus, Deathloop. It won our GotY gong in 2021 and now, thanks to the latest crop of Epic Games Store free games, you can snag a copy completely for free.

Ian scored Arkane's creative, time-twisting FPS a full 10/10 in our Deathloop review – it would go on to snag our coveted top spot in the 2021 Game of the Year awards. The hook here is that your leading man, Colt Vahn, has just a single day to eliminate eight targets across the island of Blackreef, all while being pursued by rival assassin Julianna Blake. The good news is that you can repeat this as many times as is needed to calculate the perfect line and score every kill in one run.

Deathloop becomes a distinctive spin on the immersive sim that feels almost like a puzzle game. Each time you set out, you learn a little more, whether it's discovering new routes to traverse the map or noting down gaps in guard patrols that you can exploit. You might end up trialing multiple different means of execution for each potential victim before, ultimately, securing a method to put an end to them all in one go.

Now, you can get it for free, and all you need is an Epic Games Store account. Simply head over there any time between now and Thursday June 12, and you can claim a copy of Deathloop for free, and it's yours to keep forever. Not only that, but there's also the chance to get your hands on cartoon adventure game Ogu and the Secret Forest at no cost as well. It might not be as high profile, but with a 93%-positive Steam user rating, it's no slouch.

Deathloop and Ogu and the Secret Forest are both available as this week's Epic Games Store free games. They're yours to keep once claimed. Just head here to add them to your account.
