Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. salted butter, softened

  • 10 cups baguette bread cubes, dried

  • 1/2 cup chunky natural peanut butter

  • 1 (8-oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened, divided

  • 2 tsp. granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup strawberry and/or blackberry jam

  • 6 eggs

  • 3 1/2 cups milk

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

  • 1 1/4 tsp. vanilla

  • 1/2 tsp. salt

  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg

  • 3 Tbsp. salted butter, melted

  • 1/4 cup sugar cubes, coarsely crushed (optional)

  • Fresh strawberries and powdered sugar (optional)

Directions

  1. Spread softened butter all over in a 3-qt. rectangular baking dish. Arrange bread cubes in prepared dish. In a bowl stir together peanut butter, half of the cream cheese, and the 2 tsp. sugar. Use two spoons to drop mounds of peanut butter mixture into crevices among the bread cubes. Drop mounds of jam into empty crevices. Cube remaining cream cheese; tuck cubes in any empty spaces.

  2. In a large bowl whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla, salt, nutmeg, and the 6 Tbsp. sugar. Pour egg mixture over bread mixture in dish. Press down lightly with the back of a large spoon until all the bread is moistened. Cover and chill at least 2 hours or overnight.

  3. Let casserole stand 30 minutes at room temperature before baking. Preheat oven to 350°F. Uncover dish. Drizzle with melted butter and sprinkle with crushed sugar cubes (if using).

  4. Bake until center is puffed and golden, 40 to 45 minutes. If necessary to prevent overbrowning, cover with foil the last 10 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. If you like, sprinkle with fresh strawberries and powdered sugar.
