After plenty of criticism from players, Fromsoftware is finally promising to add an official Elden Ring Nightreign duos mode to the game. As it stands, you can only play Nightreign solo or in a trio, but since before launch the community has been clamoring for a way to play in a team of two. That's not all the Dark Souls and Bloodborne studio is working on, though, as the team reaffirms it has Nightreign DLC planned for later this year, alongside enhancements to existing Nightlord bosses.
It's safe to say that Elden Ring Nightreign has been a colossal success for Fromsoftware. Just a few short days since release, the studio is already celebrating a staggering 3.5 million players. This makes the multiplayer RPG one of Fromsoftware's fastest-selling games to date, and presents a bright future for Nightreign.
We're not going to be left wanting, either, as Fromsoftware has both premium DLC and free updates coming throughout 2025. The DLC will introduce new playable characters to take on your runs, alongside even more boss encounters that'll spice up the variety on offer. The free updates, meanwhile, are now set to include some massive community-requested features, as outlined by Fromsoftware.
"In addition to the DLC releasing later this year, new additions will be gradually implemented, including enhanced fights against existing Nightlords starting this month, as well as Duo Expeditions at a later date. Thank you for your support."
Players have been vocal about wanting Nightreign to have a duos option since before launch, and until now, Fromsoftware hadn't committed to its inclusion. Not everyone can find two friends to play with all the time, and adding a third randomer to the game can sometimes cause unwanted chaos, as Nat explains in our Elden Ring Nightreign review.
Earlier this year, Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki said Fromsoftware was considering duos, but didn't make a promise at the time. If you can't wait, though, there is an alternative. Prolific soulslike modder 'Yui' has added two-player co-op to the game, giving you the option to squad up with one friend and take on the night yourselves.
As for the Nightlord enhancements, it's currently unclear what Fromsoftware has planned for the existing Elden Ring Nightreign bosses. I imagine they'll be tweaked to work better in both solo and duo runs, but we may also see new mechanics sprinkled in to keep them feeling fresh.
