If you've finished with Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and are looking for another French studio's take on the JRPG genre, I've got exactly what you need. I was fortunate enough to go hands on with the upcoming Edge of Memories recently, and the action RPG has some slick combat ideas that make it one to watch. With pedigree from Xenoblade Chronicles X, Nier, Nier Automata, and Chrono Trigger, Edge of Memories can't come soon enough.
The Corrosion has almost completely devastated the world. This affliction mutates whatever it touches into grotesque abominations, and it's leaving the people of Avaris on the edge of extinction. Taking up the mantle of Soul Whisperer Eline, it's your job to explore what's left in Edge of Memories and help who you can, utilizing fast-paced real-time combat to take out the infected enemies in a flurry of devastating moves.
You're not alone in developer Midgar Studio's JRPG, however, as companions Ysoris and Kanta accompany you on your journey. While you control Eline as you would any other action protagonist, using dodges, jumps, and a flurry of attacks to take out foes, Ysoris and Kanta act in more of a support role.
You pick between a number of abilities for the two characters, and use them on cooldowns while you attack. You can even swap between separate builds on the fly, which include active moves and a passive that can shape how effective you are in combat. It's a simple set up, but one I found to be incredibly effective as I swapped between builds to make the most out of any encounter.
There are even fire, ice, and thunder elemental attacks to choose from, each of which work better against specific opponents. These attacks can even unlock parts of the world, but I had the most fun switching between them depending on whoever I was fighting.
If you're a fan of Nier Automata's slick combat, you'll definitely find something to enjoy with Edge of Memories. Fights have a similar vibe, and can even be quite challenging if you let a swarm of enemies surround you without thinking.
Edge of Memories has quite the expertise behind it, too. Nier scriptwriter Sawako Natori, Nier Automata singer Emi Evans, Xenoblade Chronicles X character designer Raita Kazama, and Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda are all involved in the game in some way.
Nacon and Midgar Studio currently have Edge of Memories set for a Q4 2025 release. You can wishlist it on Steam right here.
