Had your fill of Diablo 4 and Vessel of Hatred? Still waiting for Path of Exile 2 to round out its early-access development period? If you're craving an ARPG with incredible class identity, a ton of skill expression, and oodles of loot, you owe it to yourself to try Last Epoch. After a successful 1.0 release in 2024, Eleventh Hour Games recently launched Season 2 of the time-hopping action RPG, bringing it to a new bar of quality that saw it overtake PoE 2 on Steam, and you can snag it cheap right now.
Back when it left early access, I called Last Epoch "a worthy challenger to the ARPG throne." You can read my full Last Epoch review for a detailed breakdown, but the quick description is that it manages to strike perhaps the ideal balance between the casual-friendly but ultimately shallow buildcrafting of Diablo 4, and the intricate yet easily overwhelming complexity of Path of Exile. The result is one of the best games like Diablo in years, and it's only gotten better as EHG has continued to roll out updates expanding the endgame and adding new features.
Each of the five Last Epoch classes and their three mastery variants manages to present an identity that feels truly defined, from the soul-siphoning lich to the falconer with its trained attack bird. Every single ability in the game has its own skill tree, letting you tweak its stats or even dramatically transform its effects, yet these are presented in a way that feel easy to follow even as a newcomer, and the ability to quickly respec your loadout (or even your entire subclass since the new update) makes experimentation simple.
Building on that further is loot that you can easily understand, yet with lots of depth at your fingertips. That's enhanced by the crafting; pull stats you like off items you don't want and inject them onto ones with more potential. Again, it's all remarkably comprehensible, but with plenty to keep you coming back. Then, as you work your way through the endgame – a mixture of PoE-style maps with increasingly tough modifiers, and rewarding boss battles that put your build and skills to the test – you can unlock the ability to slam two of your strongest gear pieces together to create the ultimate treasure.
Helping you find that gear is another of Last Epoch's best-in-class features, the loot filter. Fully integrated into the game, this allows you to define exactly which item types, stats, and modifiers you want to see (or those you don't), and adjust how loot appears on your screen to make sure you don't miss that perfect drop. Once more, it's surprisingly easy to pick up and use, but if it all sounds a bit too much, you can quickly import one created by other members of the community that suits your needs with a simple copy and paste.
Already clocking in at a budget price, Last Epoch is currently on sale via Fanatical, giving you the ARPG at the lowest cost it's been on Steam. As an additional note, consider that while Path of Exile is a free Steam game, and PoE 2 will follow suit when it leaves early access, you'll likely spend a similar amount on premium stash tabs to expand your storage. In comparison, while you have to buy the base game, Last Epoch gives you 200 stash pages to work with, with the ability to sort, group, and color them to help keep everything in order.
Last Epoch is 20% off on Steam via Fanatical until Monday June 2 at 4pm PST / 7pm EST (Tuesday June 3 at midnight BST / 1am CEST). Expect to pay $27.99 / £29.50 for your copy. Click the box above, or head directly to Fanatical to take advantage of the deal while it lasts.
