Nothing beats blasting through waves of enemies with friends. Games like Left 4 Dead, Borderlands, and Helldivers 2 are all well aware of the fact that squadding up with buddies to mow down countless opponents is half the fun, but I want more. Well, Deadzone: Rogue is here to answer the call. After launching in April to an 82% Steam rating from more than 3,500 user reviews, the game's demo is back. So if you want to try it for yourself before heading into early access, now you can.
You've just awoken on the ISS-X, but you've no memory of who you are, and rogue biomechanical machines roam the halls. To survive, you'll need to fight nigh endless waves of enemies, loot anything you can get your hands on, and upgrade your augments as you go. This is Deadzone: Rogue, and you can try to stay alive alone or as a group of up to three players.
As an FPS game first and foremost, you'll need to know how to shoot. You face waves of robotic spiders, hunter-drones, and mindless cybernetic creatures, but then there are also the gigantic bosses. These enhanced demons of space will always put up a fight, and you'll need to be suitably prepared to take them on.
This is where Deadzone: Rogue's penchant for loot comes in. You have loads of weapons to master, each of which you can modify with elemental affixes or upgrades as you progress. As PCGamesN's resident Borderlands hound, I'm always up for trying to make the biggest number possible fly off an enemy when you blast them, and Deadzone: Rogue has that in spades. You can freeze, burn, and shock your cybernetic opponents. Or just shoot them in the head, that usually works.
Deadzone: Rogue also has some roguelike elements, though, if you want to leave your fate up to chance. Augments, perks, and items can change how you approach each run, while more permanent upgrades allow you to hone in on a specific playstyle.
If you're yet to try the game, it's been available in Steam Early Access for a few weeks now. If you'd rather get a taste of what to expect for free, however, developer Prophecy Games has brought the demo back for a limited time. You have access to the Zone 1 story mission in solo or co-op, giving you just enough to decide if you want to take the plunge into the rest of the game.
Deadzone: Rogue is available in Steam Early Access right now, but you can also play the demo for free until Monday June 2. Just head right here.
